Michael Stark, MD Prof. & Dr. h.c.

 

Michael Stark is the chairman of the gynaecological departments of the HELIOS hospital group. With 60 hospitals in Germany and a capacity of more than 25,000 beds, this is one of the biggest hospital groups in Europe. He is also the president of the New European Surgical Academy (NESA). NESA is an initiative of leading gynaecologists, general surgeons, urologists, anaesthesiologists and otorhinolaryn-gologists. It deals with the analysis and evaluation of existing surgical procedures and their ways of performance and created the first European based working group on Natural Orifice Surgery. He modified gynaecological operations such as the caesarean section (Misgav Ladach method), the vaginal hysterectomy (Ten-Step Vaginal Hysterectomy). His publications deal mainly with the improvement of surgical techniques. He has given surgical courses in 37 countries, in the Americas, Asia, and Europe.  One of his main projects is the transfer of surgical know-how to countries with limited resources.
